Prevention of Alcoholism and Subsistence of [Drugs] abuse.

The alcoholic and drug abuse clients are treated through medical and psychological therapies and help to lead a healthy and happy life. Individual counseling, family therapy, group therapy, yoga classes, re-educative sessions, recreational activities, vocational training, referral and follow-up services are the supportive services provided at the treatment center. The client has to stay for 21 days and the treatment services are completely free. The centre functions at Nagapattinam from March 2001.

Young People Community Peer Education Programme

In collaboration with Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK), Avvai trains young people on STI/HIV/AIDS and related issues in Nagapattinam District and promotes peer education among young people to sustain the programme in the intervention villages. The trained peer educators disseminate information to other youth members in the village and act as a role model for other youth. The programme is being implemented from 2005 .

School AIDS Education Programme

Sensitized Headmasters and trained two teachers and two students of 9th and 11th standard of Government and Government aided schools in Nagapattinam and Thiruvarur Districts of Tamil Nadu with the support of UNICEF, Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society and Directorate of Teachers Education Research and Training. Avvai village welfare society has been selected by UNICEF as supportive NGO at first phase and Core NGO at second phase on implementation of School AIDS Education Programme. The programme promoted peer education among students and initiated Red Ribbon Clubs in schools.

Education on Prevention and control of HIV / AIDS Programmes

The programme educates on prevention and control of STI/HIV/AIDS and promotes peer education among Children, Young People, Men and Women in 10 tsunami affected villages of Sirkali and Kollidam Blocks of Nagapattinam District. The programme focuses on streamlining of HIV/AIDS by networking with other like minded institutionst from January 2007.

District Resource Centre

Avvai is the convener for District Resource Centre of Nagapattinam District for Tamil Nadu Voluntary Health Association from April 2006. The programmes related to STI/HIV/AIDS, Child Health Care, Parenting, Livelihood assistance for PLWHA, Disaster preparedness and Child protection are implemented with the network of local partnership of NGOs in Nagapattinam District.

In appreciation of effective quality output derived out of community based programmes, AVVAI has been conferred with the following Awards.

  • State Level Awards for Best SHG-Bank Linkage Programme- 2000-01,2002-03,2003 - 04 and 2004 -05.
  • District Level Award for Best NGO in Skill Development for SHGs- Thiruvarur- 2003-04.

In addition to awards, Avvai has been nominated to various prestigious Government Committees in recognition of the services renders by us.
